A food recall may be issued because a product could contain a harmful germ, an undeclared allergen, or a foreign object. Notices can be specific, so do not rely on a brand name alone. FDA-regulated foods and products regulated by USDA have different recall channels; follow the agency notice for the product.

Match the exact package

Compare the product name, package size, UPC, lot or batch code, best-by or use-by date, and any geographic distribution details with the recall notice. Take a photo of the label if that helps. A product from the same brand may not be included if its code or date differs. When the notice is unclear, use the agency contact information rather than guessing.

Do not eat or share a recalled item

Follow the recall instructions. The notice may say to return the item, discard it, or take another step. Do not donate a recalled food or give it to a pet. If disposal is directed, seal it securely so another person or animal cannot consume it. Wash hands after handling the package.

Clean surfaces that may have been exposed

If the food leaked or touched refrigerator shelves, utensils, counters, or containers, follow the agency's cleaning and sanitizing instructions. Wash with hot, soapy water first, then use an appropriate sanitizer as directed. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, and keep cleaning products away from food and children.

If someone ate the food

Do not panic, but note the product and date consumed. Some contamination does not cause symptoms in every person. If symptoms develop, contact a healthcare professional, mention the recalled product, and follow the recall notice. Seek urgent care for severe symptoms or a serious allergic reaction. People at higher risk of foodborne illness should be particularly attentive to official advice.
